This beginner-friendly sourdough bread recipe creates a golden crust and soft, airy interior, perfect for cozy meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 ¼ cups lukewarm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the active sourdough starter and lukewarm water in a large bowl.
  2. Stir in the flour, then add the fine sea salt.
  3. Mix everything together with a fork until the dough becomes stiff.
  4. Use your hands to bring the dough together into a ball.
  5. Place the dough ball back into the bowl, cover it, and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  6. After resting, stretch and fold the dough a few times, then reform it into a ball.
  7. Cover and let it rise in a warm place overnight or until doubled in size (about 8 hours).
  8. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and fold to tighten the shape.
  9. Let the dough sit for 15 minutes.
  10. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a floured proofing basket.
  11. Cover and let it rise for another 2-3 hours, until doubled in size.
  12. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  13. Dump the dough ball onto a sheet of parchment and place it into the preheated Dutch oven.
  14. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.
  15. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 30 minutes, until deeply browned and crispy.
  16. Move the loaf to a cooling rack and allow it to cool completely before slicing.

Notes
